Pererinion Ysbrydol Festival Academy - PYFA 2025
We are excited to present the first edition of the Pererinion Ysbrydol Festival Academy taking place at the Gregynog Hall. Taking place in the beautiful scenery of Wales, PYFA is a 7-day summer residential masterclass for specifically for conservatoire students from all over the world!
Our Academy will have 4 disciplines of violin, viola, cello and piano chamber music offering each student three ninety-minute lessons throughout the week from our world-class professors and tutors. There will be faculty concerts for students to attend and student concerts of pre-arranged chamber groups, which they will work on throughout the week. The course finale will be a string orchestra concert led by our professors and Artistic Directors!

Equally at home as a violinist and violist, Serbian Milena Simović is enjoying an illustrious international career of concerto, recital and chamber music performances.
Acclaimed for her work in Europe, Asia and America, Milena appears as a soloist in Russia, China, Italy, United Kingdom, Norway, France, Portugal, and through the countries of former Yugoslavia, performing alongside some of the most established personalities of today’s music scene.
Milena’s chamber music partners include Ivry Gitlis, Vadim Repin, Leonidas Kavakos, Antonio Meneses, Yuja Wang, Denis Kozhukhin, Vadim Kholodenko, Konstantin Lifschitz, Beatrice Rana, Boris Andrianov, Itamar Golan, Julian Rachlin, Roman Simovic, Gordan Nikolitch, Tim Hugh and many others.
Milena’s concerts have been broadcasted live on BBC Radio 3, Medici TV, Rai Uno in Italy, Arte etc. and her performances praised as “…exceptionally delivered performance, charged with brilliant combination of operatic quality, which was jaw-dropping at times”, “seductive and exciting…with rare artistic sensibility” in the press.
Milena holds a professorship at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London and is a resident viola and a chamber music coach at the Culture Festival in Sardinian town of Santulussurgiu, taking place in August every year, which enjoys versatility of students from all continents.
Milena Simović received Bachelor and Masters of Music in violin from the Belgrade University of the Arts and Music, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Milena furthered her studies with viola and has completed another Masters degree at the Zurich University of Arts under Lawrence Power.
Milena Simović plays a Giovanni Battista Rogeri violin ca. 1680, and Paolo Antonio Testore viola from 1740.
Boris Kusnezow is one of the most sought after collaborative pianists of his generation. He performs with eminent instrumentalists and singers worldwide. His performances have taken him to renowned concert venues such as the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall London and the Berlin Philharmonie.
His artistic activities are documented in 12 CDs and numerous radio recordings. Several of his CDs have been nominated for prizes, including the Opus Klassik and Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
Boris Kusnezow is in demand as an official pianist for some of the world’s most prestigious instrumental and singing competitions, most recently being invited to the ARD Competition in Munich, the Joseph Joachim Competition in Hannover, the Stuttgart International Violin Competition and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
Boris Kusnezow was born in Moscow and began his musical education at the traditional Gnessin Academy. He has lived in Germany from the age of eight and completed his musical studies in Hannover with Professor Bernd Goetzke. Thereafter followed first place at the German Music Competition, international awards such as Fellowship of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust and scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.
In addition to his active performing activities, he is founder of the piano chamber music academy Chamber Lab in Montecastelli/ Italy, artistic director of the International Music Academy for Soloists (IMAS) as well as the Schaumburger Schlosskonzerte at Schloss Bückeburg and volunteers for the Loewe Foundation, where he focuses on the promotion of classical music.
Teaching has become an important element in Kusnezow‘s artistic career. In 2020 he was appointed professor for piano chamber music at the University for Music and Theatre „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ Leipzig.
Roman Simovic’s brilliant virtuosity and seemingly-inborn musicality, fuelled by a limitless imagination, has taken him throughout all continents performing on many of world’s leading stages including the Carnegie Hall, Bolshoi Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Mariinsky Hall in St. Petersburg, Grand Opera House in Tel-Aviv, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Rudolfinum Hall in Prague, Barbican Hall in London, Art Centre in Seoul, Grieg Hall in Bergen, Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, to name a few.
Roman Simovic has been awarded prizes at numerous international competitions among which are:”Premio Rodolfo Lipizer” (Italy, first prize winner and winner of 12 Audience prizes), Sion-Valais (Switzerland), Yampolsky Violin Competition (Russia) and the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition (Poland), placing him among the foremost violinists of his generation.
As soloist, Roman has appeared with the world leading orchestras: London Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, Teatro Regio Torino, Symphony Nova Scotia (Canada), Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra (Hungary), Camerata Bern (Switzerland), Camerata Salzburg (Austria), CRR Chamber Orchestra (Turkey), Poznan Philharmonia, Prague Philharmonia, North Brabant (Holland), RTE Madrid, OSESP Sao Paolo, Academy St. Martin in the Fields… with conductors like: Valery Gergiev, Antonio Pappano, Daniel Harding, Gianandrea Noseda, Kristian Jarvi, Sir Simon Rattle, Jiri Belohlavek, Pablo Heras Casado, Nikolai Znaider, Thomas Søndergård, Nuno Coelho, Jaime Martin, amongst others.

Roman holds a visiting professor of violin position at the Royal Academy of Music in London and has an extensive experience as an educator. Roman has presented masterclasses in the US, UK, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Montenegro, Israel, as well as at the Verbier Festival where he is frequently performing as a soloist with orchestra, as chamber musician and recitalist.
Roman Simovic has released comprehensive list of recordings, most notable are four CDs directing LSO string orchestra for the LSO live label as well as a CD of complete Paganini caprices for violin solo. In November 2024, LSO live label released new CD with Roman Simovic as soloist, performing Concerto for violin and orchestra by Miklos Rozsa as well as Béla Bartók (Violin concerto no. 2), accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra and conducted by maestro Sir Simon Rattle and Kevin John Edusei. The next disc which will be released in 2025 is 6 solo violin sonatas by Eugène Isai.
During 2024, Roman performed as a soloist on tour with Sao Paolo State Orchestra (OSESP), with conductor Thierry Fischer at the opening of Musikfest Berlin in the Great hall of the Berlin Philharmonic, at festivals in Edinburgh, Sao Paolo, Granada, Tübingen , Hanover, etc. Roman played the double Brahms concerto for violin and cello with Pablo Ferrandez and Nunho Coelho in Spain and as soloist with Liszt Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Asturias (Orquestra Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias), etc.
Roman is serving as a leader of the London Symphony Orchestra since 2010.
Roman Simovic plays a 1709 Antonio Stradivariviolin which was generously given to him on loan from Jonathan Moulds.
The world-renowned cellist and conductor David Cohen embodies a unique combination of qualities making him one of the most versatile and exciting musicians of this day. He has been internationally acclaimed for his remarkable instrumental mastery, generous musicianship, vast experience in varied repertoires combined with a flamboyant charisma.
Highlights of the 2024-2025 season include Davids’ appearence as a conductor with the PHION Orchestra in The Netherlands and his performance as a cellist of the Edward Elgar Cello Concerto at the Barbican Centre together with the London Symphony Orchestra and Antonio Pappano.
Born in the town of Tournai in Belgium, David made his solo debut with the Belgium National Orchestra at the age of nine. His international career as a soloist soon flourished leading him to perform with top-class orchestras such as the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Soloist Chamber Orchestra, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Liege, l’Orchestre Symphonique de la VRT, l’Orchestre de la Beethoven Akademie, l’Orchestre National de Lille, the Zurich chamber orchestra, L’Orchestre de chambre de Lausanne, l’Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Grenoble, the Polish Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphonia of Varsaw, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, NHK, BBC Concert Orchestra. Furthermore, David has worked as a soloist with some of the most distinguished conductors in the industry such as Lord Menuhin, Mislave Rostropovitch, Walter Weller, Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Ashkenazy, C.V.Dohnanyi, Pedro Hallfter, Martin Brabbins.
His solo debut in Japan with The N.H.K and Maestro V.Ashkenazy performing Tchaikowsky ‘Rococo Variations’ in June 2007 has made a great impression, leading to recurring collaborations in the years to follow.
As a graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Guidhall School of Music & Drama, with the support of a grant from the Menuhin Foundation, David won more than 25 prizes in International Cello Competitions. Amongst his prizes and awards are the Gold Medal of the GSMD in London, (like Jaqueline Dupre), The Geneva International Cello Competition, the Audi International Competition, International Cello Competition in Douai, ’Tenuto’international Competition”, The Guilherminia Suggia Gift, The Ian Flaming Trust, SPES, KPMG Martin Scholarship, Hattory Foundation, Berllotti-Buitonie Fellowship award, Fondation SUISA, J.S.Bach International Competition.
Furthermore, David was Nominated ECHO “Rising Star” for the season 2002-2003 by the “Royal Philharmonic Society of Belgium” and the “Concertgebouw”.
Davids’ passion for chamber music has led him to regularly enjoy collaborating with fine musicians in major International cello- and chamber music festivals such as Kronberg (Germany), Manchester ( U.K), Cambridge (U.K.), Beauvais (France), Orpheus Baccheus in Bordeaux ( France), the Gstaad Festival (Suisse), West Cork (Ireland) Kuhmo (Finland) Elverum (Norway) Oxford (u.k), Sonoro (Bucharest).
David is the Artistic Director of the Melchior Ensemble, which brings together the finest musicians from Europe such as a.o. Sasha Sitkovetsky, Priya Mitchel, Corine Chapelle, Silver Ainomae, Razvan Popovici and is the ensemble in Residence in Peter House Cambridge.
David was appointed Principal Cello of the Philharmonia Orchestra in March 2001 (making him the youngest principal cellist in the history.). He has be appointed Principal cello of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2022.
Internationally award winning discography by David is to be found with Forlane, Classic FM, Cypres-Records and the LPO Label. It includes recordings of the Lutoslawsky cello concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the S.Gubbaidulina cello concerto with the BBC Symphony.
David plays on a magnificient Dominicus Montagnana cello circa 1735 granted with kindness and generosity by Mrs. Pat Morton and with the support of the Razumovsky trust.
David is the creator and artistic director of « Les Sons Intensifs » , a vibrant chamber music festival in the home town of the famous artist Renee Magritte (Lessines, Belgium).
