Ticino Musica Festival Academy 2025

From July 18 to July 31 2025, the Ticino Musica Festival offers a new edition of its prestigious Academy dedicated to emerging young musicians. Set in the heart of the beautiful Ticino region, the Academy gives participants the opportunity to study with internationally renowned teachers through masterclasses and specialized courses​.

Danilo Rossi, viola
A pupil of some of the most important Masters of Viola and Chamber Music, Danilo Rossi graduated at the age of 19 with the highest honours, but already by the age of 16, he was already making a name for himself, winning his first International Competition. As soon as he graduated, he passed the competition for First Viola Soloist of the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra in Milan, a position he held until January 2022.
In the history of the Milan Theatre, he was the youngest instrumentalist to have held this position. From then on, Danilo Rossi's career will be punctuated by a series of meetings, concerts, festivals, and recitals that will take him around the world, performing in the most important theatres and concert halls.
Danilo Rossi has ranged through even the most distant musical genres countless times. His numerous collaborations with great jazz or pop artists have made Danilo Rossi a unique example of how it is possible to experience music in its entirety, without any barriers.
Always open to the most diverse experiences, he has numerous encounters with actors, writers and poets to his credit, which have led him to perform in the most diverse environments: from prisons to the woods of Trentino, from the swamps of Sri Lanka to the Off Theatres of the suburbs.
Thanks to the great masters with whom he has studied and to the important artistic encounters in his over thirty-year career, Danilo Rossi has been able to acquire musical and human certainties that have enabled him to achieve extraordinary results for the many students who have had the constancy to follow him.

Gabor Meszaros, bassoon and chamber music
Born in a family with a great musical tradition, Gabor Meszaros studies with his father Janos Meszaros, former student of Karel Pivonka. He also followed courses with Milan Turkovic, Frantisek Hermann, Werner Seltmann, Knut Sönstevold and Karl Leister.
At age 26 he became principal bassoon at the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with different orchestras in Switzerland, Spain and Germany, and has acted as soloist under the direction of Arpad Joo, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Anthony Wit, Franz-Paul Decker, Philippe Bender, Johannes Goritzki, Lü Jia, Odón Alonso, Cristian Mandeal and Gilbert Varga. He is regularly invited as jury member in many international competitions.
Since 1998, he is bassoon professor at the Conservatory in Lugano. Some of his students have received high ranking awards in international competitions and have become regular members in different symphony orchestras. He also dedicates lots of time to conduct the woodwind ensemble of the Lugano Conservatory, so being able to transmit his vast experience as a chamber music player.
Hi regularly gives masterclasses in Italy, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, China, Corea and Switzerland, and works also as solo bassoon with different orchestras like the Festival Orchester Basel, the Mendelssohn Philharmonie Düsseldorf and the National Orchestra of the Basque Country in San Sebastian. In 2000 he was invited as main bassoon for the Millennium Gala Concert of the Nations, which took place at the Lincoln Center in New York and was organised by the UNESCO.
Chamber music is an integral part of his artistic activity. He is member of the Swiss Nonet, the Ensemble Varié, the Trio insolito, the Ticino Musica Ensemble, and has also collaborated with the Ensemble Villa Musica. As a soloist he has performed in Europe, Asia, and North and Central America, in cities like Zurich, Bern, Berlin, Cologne, Madrid, Bacelona, Shaghai, Seoul, New York City, and the like. He has also participated to different radio and television broadcasts. In 2002 he published his latest CD: Music for Bassoon and Piano – “France”, with the label La Bottega Musicali (Milan), which was received by the critics.
Since 2009, Gabor Meszaros is Artistic Director of the Ticino Musica Festival.

Frits Damrow, trumpet
Frits Damrow started his musical career as principal trumpet of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of the Netherlands when he was 21 and still had to finish his studies at the Maastrichts Conservatory. After 9 years he was appointed as principal trumpet of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam holding this position from 1991 until 2010. He was also active as a trumpet teacher at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam from 1993 until 2010.
As a chamber musician, Frits Damrow played in different groups like the Amsterdam Bach Soloists, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Ebony Band, the Brass Quintet and Brass Ensemble of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Since 2009 he has been Professor of trumpet at the University of the Arts in Zürich, Switzerland (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste).
He is a regular teacher and soloist at many summer courses and festivals, like the Ticino Musica Festival Academy in Switzerland, the Hamamatsu Summer Wind Academy and the Affinis Festival in Japan, Musica Verano in Mexico, Ionian Summer Academy in Greece, Cursu International de Musica in Spain, Blekinge Int. Brass Academy and the Aurora Festival in Sweden, the Tbilisi Wind Festival in Georgia and Sauerland Herbst in Germany. He also gave Masterclasses at institutions like North Western University in Chicago, the San Fransisco Conservatory, the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, the Hochschulen in Freiburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, the Tchaikowsky Conservatory and Gnesin Academy in Moscow, the State Conservatory in Athens, Greece, Shobi University in Tokyo, the National University in Seoul and several Universities in China.
As a soloist Frits Damrow played with orchestras like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Symfonietta Amsterdam, Rotterdam Chamber Orchestra, Italian Chamber Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Lithuania, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Transilvania in Rumania, Slovak Symfonietta and the Symphony Orchestra of Seoul.

Peter Steiner, trombone
Italian trombonist Peter Steiner’s playing has been described as “beautifully controlled with a vocal sound” and he is recognized around the world as “a new trombone star within his generation” who “plays with total control”. In 2019 he was honoured as a Prize Winner at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia.
His 2024-2025 season will feature performances with the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra as well as Duo concerts together with Constanze Hochwartner in Austria, Australia, China, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA.Mr. Steiner has performed as soloists with numerous ensembles around the world including, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Philharmonisches Orchester Würzburg, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfõnica Brasileira, Bartlesville Symphony and Central Ohio Symphony. A strong advocate of new music, Peter has premiered many compositions, among many highlights are the World Premieres of the UFO Concerto for Trombone by Johan de Meij, the Trombone Concerto by Dimitri Cervoas well as Departures -Double Concerto No. 2 by Kevin Day.
At the age of 23, Peter Steiner was appointed Trombonist of the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Philharmonic for the 2016-2017 season. Prior to that engagement, he served as Principal Trombonist with the Colorado Symphony for the 2014-2015 season. He has performed as a guest trombonist with the Munich Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Steiner began his studies at the Music Conservatory in his hometown of Bolzano, Italy before continuing his studies at The Mozarteum of Salzburg (Austria). In 2016 he graduated from The Juilliard School in New York City with a Performance Diploma. His major teachers and influences include Joseph Alessi, Warren Deck, Nitzan Haroz, and Dany Bonvin. Mr. Steiner performs exclusively on Bach Trombones - his signature is the Artisan 47XPS.

Ricardo Carvalhoso, tuba
The Portuguese tuba player Ricardo Carvalhoso belongs to a new generation of musicians that has given new momentum to the art of tuba playing.
Prizewinner of numerous international competitions
, Ricardo currently holds the position of Tuba Solo of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and regularly gives masterclasses throughout Europe.
Before joining the Munich Philharmonic, his orchestral career had taken him to France, as a tuba-soloist of the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, and to Switzerland, where he held the same position with the orchestra of the Zurich Opera House - Philharmonia Zürich.
As an educator, Ricardo Carvalhoso taught at the University of Music “Franz Liszt” Weimar between 2021 and 2023 and currently serves on the faculty of the Haute École de Musique in Geneva.
